Phd Student Srajit M. Kumar

Srajit M. Kumar is a PhD student at the Department of History working under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kama Maclean. His dissertation, provisionally titled “Time, (Non) Work and Political Consciousness: The Kanpur Working Class, 1914-47” explores how the labouring poor of agrarian United Provinces transitioned to industrial work. It focuses on how their experience and perception of time changed as part of this transition, and how that, in turn, influenced their political consciousness. His doctoral project is funded by a DAAD PhD scholarship.

He completed his Masters in History from the University of Delhi in 2022, and obtained his Bachelor’s in History from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in 2020.
His broader research interests include histories of labour, the partition, communalism, the 18th century, and the city of Delhi.
