Urdu Lecturer Dr. Arian Hopf

Dr. Arian Hopf has been the Urdu lecturer at the South Asia Institute since 2018. He earned his M.A. from the Department of Modern South Asian Languages at the University of Heidelberg in 2014 and completed his Ph.D. in 2018 on the topic “The Dynamics of the Concept of Religion in Colonial South Asia.” His research delves into the conceptualizations of Pakistan, language ideologies—particularly Urdu as a symbol of Indo-Muslim culture and a marker of Pakistani identity—and the study of Islamic popular literature in Pakistan.
