Research

The Department of Cultural and Religious History of South Asia is one of the leading centers in Europe with optimal research facilities in the field. Its international faculty is dedicated to an academic study of South Asia based on the study of texts, often complemented by anthropological study (‘ethno-indology’). Through research-based teaching we communicate our research on South Asia to our students, informed by deep local knowledge, global and transcultural perspective, and collaboration. Research on South Asia in Heidelberg is facilitated by the incredible library of the South Asia Institute, part of the CATS library with more than 600.000 titles and audiovisual resources. Many international visitors add to the South Asia Institute’s research program.
