Researcher Dr. Simon Cubelic

Simon Cubelic studied Classical Indology and Political Science of South Asia at Heidelberg University and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. In February 2017 he received his PhD from Heidelberg University with a thesis on the colonial codification of Hindu law within the frame of the research project “Transcultural Legal Flows in 18th- and 19th-century South Asia: Changing Ideas and Practices of Law and Legitimation in Hindu Legal Cultures” (Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”). Since 2014 he has been research associate at the research unit “Documents on the History of Religion and Law of premodern Nepal” of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and since 2020 academic librarian in the South Asia department of the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) library. He has also taken appointments as research associate at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) and visiting lecturer at the Institute for Religious Studies of Heidelberg University. Since 2016 he serves at the editorial board of the Interdisziplinäre Zeitschrift für Südasienforschung (IZSAF).

His current research focuses on the intellectual history of legal and political thought of premodern South Asia in in Sanskrit und Nepālī, Dharmaśāstra literature, Nepalese archival documents and epigraphy, and digital methods in South Asia research.
